Hidden Gems of Kansas City

Ever ask someone, “What did you do this weekend?” And they reply, “I went to a bar that looked just like the Willy Wonka Factory, but it had more foam!”

No? Well, I have. Since that conversation, I’ve found myself running across more and more interesting places in Kansas City. Many of these attractions one wouldn’t expect to find in the corn invested Midwest.

In light of this, I’ve compiled a list of what I find to be the most unique attractions, bars, and places to visit in KC!

A Waterfall in Kansas City Metro

Attraction: Mill Creek Sanctuary

Where: Mill Creek Park – 400 J.C. Nichols Pkwy, Kansas City, MO 64111

MillCreekFountain

A touch of Eden lies on the north end of Mill Creek Park in the Middle of Kansas City’s metro. This sanctuary features two natural waterfalls that were used to power the metro’s mill back in the early 1800’s (hence the name Mill Creek Park). The area also features some water-loving plants that are uncommon to the dry climate of the Midwest, as well as a natural pond surrounded by additional greenery. A place simulating that of paradise, it is no wonder they named this area “The Sanctuary”.

Willy Wonka Moved to KC

Bar: Funky Town

Location: 8300 Blue Pkwy, Kansas City, MO 64133

When someone describes a bar to you as, “it was like Willy Wonka,” you can’t help but pry. Funky Town is a bar like no other in Kansas City. Here, one will find dancers decked out in costumes showcasing both mind-blowing and hysterical acrobatic routines. The walls are covered with elaborate decorations that seem to move throughout the night. There is even a foam machine that pumps foam from the ceiling and the walls turning the entire dance floor into a giant sea of foam! One may wonder why a place as intriguing as Funky Town hasn’t been marketed all over KC. For one, Funky Town is located in seclusion near Raytown. Also, the establishment does not allow its guests to take videos of any sort. That means no Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, iPhone, etc. Nonetheless, Funky Town is one of KC’s best kept secrets. If you want to partake in the fun, you’ll have to go check it out for yourself!

Zip Lining is no longer just for the California mountain dwellers and tourists. Kansas City has brought high-flying thrills to the Midwest with the development of Go Ape in Swope Park. This recreational amenity features zip lines up to 500 feet long, 30-foot Tarzan swings into cargo nets, 20-foot tall rope ladders, tons of balancing beams to get you from one area to another, and so much more. Not only is this attraction fun, it’s also safe! Secure harnesses and protective helmets are provided for each guest. Professionals are also placed throughout the area to make sure there isn’t too much “monkeying” around. This attraction is the recreational thrill-seeker’s dream!

BYOB – Be Your Own Butcher

Place: The Local Pig

Location: 2618 Guinotte Ave., Kansas City, MO 64120

There are wine painting classes where you get to create your own art to take home. There are also cooking classes where you cook a “cuisine” then get the chance to eat your own creation. However, one wouldn’t expect to hear of a place that lets you chop up your own pork and take it home with you. But alas, such a place exists and it’s right here in KC! The Local Pig aims to create this one-of-a-kind butcher shop experience. For a price ranging from $65 – $200, the brave can partake in one of The Local Pigs butcher classes. Prices vary from basic charcuterie to whole hog butchery. So, if you are looking to spice up your Sunday afternoon or want a first date you’ll never forget, check out The Local Pig butcher classes. Nothing says Midwest quite like it!
