Whether you have Odie or Garfield, it’s always best that you take the steps to make sure your animals will be good residents in your apartment. Not only will this cause you less stress as a pet owner, but it will also help you keep a good relationship with your neighbors and landlord.

Here are 5 ways that you can help ensure your pets are good neighbors and tenants:

1. Make Sure They’re Potty Trained

No one wants to smell an apartment where there have been multiple “accidents.” Both your landlord and other tenants will be happy with you and your pets if you’ve taken the time to potty train them. If you have a dog, make sure you take them outside in a timely fashion and teach them that outside is the place to “go.” If you have a cat, make sure their litter box is scooped daily and kept fresh.

2. Plenty of Exercise

This one is more for the dog owners. Take your dogs on walks and adventures to the dog park. If your dog doesn’t get enough exercise they’re more likely to be a nuisance to your neighbors and landlord because of excess energy and destructive behaviors. If you don’t have enough time during the week to give your dog the exercise they need, take them to a doggy day care or hire a dog walker.

3. Give Them Things to Do

A bored animal isn’t going to be a good neighbor. Make sure when you leave them at home alone that you’ve provided them with toys to entertain themselves. Give your dog a treat or toy to keep him occupied while you’re gone, and make sure your cat has a scratching post. Doing this will keep your neighbors happy by not having a loud animal who barks constantly while you’re not home, and your landlord happy by keeping your apartment in one piece.

4. Prohibit the Pests

Your animals will also be happy with you for this one. By taking them time to treat them for fleas and ticks you’ll be providing for the wellbeing of your animal and the entire community that you live in. Fleas are notoriously hard to get rid of and are spread very easily through carpet and other fabrics. If you don’t take the time to be proactive about pest prevention, it could be very costly to you in the long run. A pest control company could charge anywhere from $100-$300 to spray for fleas.

5. Give Them Love

An animal who feels like they’ve been neglected is more likely to be destructive as a way to get attention. Owning a pet is a huge responsibility and time commitment, make sure you take the time to keep your pet happy and feeling loved.

Pets are rewarding members of a family. By taking these steps to help ensure that your pets are good tenants and neighbors, you can provide them with a happy home for years to come.
